PLACES OF INTEREST NOT ON MAP Cedar Rapids Museum of Art---410 3rd Avenue S.E. This museum, which opened in 1989, houses the largest collection of works done by Grant Wood. A large number of Marvin Cone paintings are also here. Hours are 10:00 A.M.--4:00P.M. Tuesday through Saturday (Thursday night until 7:00 P.M.), and noon --3:00 P.M. Sunday. It is closed Mondays. Coe College---1220 1st Avenue N.E. Coe College is an integral part of the Grant Wood neighborhood. Grant Wood's boyhood home can be found one block east of Coe College. Superior Press at Coe College published Grant Wood's Junior and Senior Year Books. Marvin Cone, Grant Wood's lifetime friend was a distinguished artist and Art Professor at Coe. Accreditation for the Stone City Colony came from Coe College. Both Grant Wood and Marvin Cone taught during the summers of 1932 and 1933 at the famous Stone City Colony. In the Coe College Perrine Gallery of their Stewart Memorial Library, seven Grant Wood murals are displayed. These murals were originally located at the former Montrose Hotel's "Corn Room". A large collection of Marvin Cone's works are displayed in the Winnefred Cone Gallery also in the library. Veterans Memorial Building---2nd Avenue on Mays Island This building features the stain glasss memorial window which Grant Wood began in 1927. He put together a full sized model in the huge Quaker Oats gym before beginning the final project. He did not get the credit he was due on this project and drew "Daughters of Revolution". Residence at 3178 Grove Court S.E. Grant Wood and Paul Craver Hanson built this house and the one next door at 3170. Grant, with his mother and sister, lived at the 3178 house and Paul and Vida at 3170. Masonic Library---813 1st Avenue S.E. The Maonic library features a large assortment of history including a picture that Grant Wood painted "First Three Degrees of Free Masonry". The History Center---101 8th Avenue S.E. Nan Wood's hand-tooled leather case is here with numerous letters from Nan. "The Corn Song" pamphlet illustrated by Grant Wood also is here. Brucemore----2160 Linden Drive S.E. Grant Wood in 1925 made a mural for the second floor sleeping porch. Historic Preservation Commission |
