Grant Wood and his family moved to Cedar Rapids in 1901. The death of his father on
their farm in Anamosa necessitated this relocation. It is believed that Grant, his mother
Hattie and his siblings Nan, Jack, and Frank temporarily lived with Hattie's parents,
DeVolson and Nancy Weaver. On February 1, 1902, Hattie bought this home on 14th
Street from Mary and Wllliam Adams for 2,580 dollars. On April 19, 1902, Hattie
purchased the rest of the land north of their house to C Avenue for 900 dollars from
Edgar and Loveni Clark. Originally this house had a wrap around porch. Grant
attended Polk School and won third place in a national art contest while in eighth
grade. He attended old Washington High School and graduated in 1910, The 1909 and
1910 year books were liberally illustrated by Grant. After graduating, Grant studied
Art, later moving in and out of this neighborhood. After suffering financial difficulties,
Hattie's house and land were foreclosed and sold on May 18, 1916 to Commercial
Trust and Savings Bank. Hattie and Nan lived with Minnie Pope at the time.
