Fort Madison

Fort Madison is home to BNSF's ex-Santa Fe double track main and an ex-Burlington Northern secondary main. This photo was taken in May of this year from a pedestrian overpass near the Catfish Bend Riverboat site. Photo opportunities are not limited in Fort Madison. A rare over-under bridge crosses the Mississippi on the north edge of town. There is a highway overpass just south of town and a street overpass near the Santa Fe's yard, (central section of town). The Amtrak train "Southwest Chief" passes through town and the Amtrak depot can be a great place to watch trains. BNSF changes crews at the depot also. TPW comes into town on a daily basis, using the Fe's yard. If you travel to the depot, be responsible. Do not cross the mainline tracks and park well north of the depot. Mind your p's and q's so we can enjoy that spot in the future. Train traffic is almost always heavy, especially between 6AM and 11AM. Mainly intermodal traffic with some manifest, locals, and extras, Amtrak, and TPW. The possibility of 4 or 5 trains on the ex-BN line, mainly manifest, locals, and coal. Fort Madison is within reach of other interesting railfanning (ie. Galesburg, Burlington, and Keokuk). There are plenty of accommodations and eating establishments within the city limits.
